JOHN MUIR MEDICAL CENTER

Hospital Cogeneration

Hospitals are an excellent candidate for cogeneration systems as they can use waste heat in several ways and consume power 24/7. The high base load allows for larger cogen units to be used. Hospitals can utilize waste heat by heating boilers to keep the building warm or through an absorption chiller for MRI superconducting magnets or large refrigerators or, more simply, air conditioning. Heating a boiler is far more cost effective as absorption chiller designs are far more complex and require additional equipment, increasing costs.

EnviroGen, GenView, Absorption chiller: Significantly reduced energy costs

E3NV installed four EnviroGen Energy Modules at the John Muir Medical Center, significantly reducing the costs of heating, cooling and providing electricity to run equipment. We also installed an absorption chiller for cooling.

We continue to monitor these units with our GenView software. We alert them when maintenance is needed, and we keep the units operating at peak efficiency.

Natural gas cogens also helped reduce their carbon footprint significantly. Natural gas burns much cleaner than diesel or coal. If your facility is powered by coal, then you put 2 lbs of CO2 in the air for every kWh you consume. With a typical natural gas engine, you only pollute 1.1 lbs per kWh and our systems only produce 0.8 lbs per kWh.
